What Judges Are Looking For

The Next Gen Award is for active students aged 13 and older with a .edu or equivalent academic email address. It recognizes the best student-built app submitted with a demo video and public open-source code.

Students under the age of majority where they live need a parent or legal guardian to consent and agree to the official rules on their behalf. Minor entrants, and teams that include a minor entrant, may compete only for the Next Gen Award.

Unlike most Shipaton categories, this one does not require a paid Apple or Google developer account, and no App Store or Google Play release is required.

What To Include

  • A demo video showing the app working.
  • A link to a public open-source code repository.
  • An open source license file in the repository.
  • A clear description of what you built, what it does, and why it matters.
  • If you are under the age of majority where you live, your parent or legal guardian's name and email address and confirmation of their consent.
